Home security inspections available from Precinct 5 Constable's office
The Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's office is offering free home inspections. Schedule a time for an officer to come by your home and make simple suggestions on how to better secure it. This service will give you peace of mind and may save you 5-10% on your homeowner's insurance. Driving home & leaving your car out:

  • Program your cell phone with the Precinct 5 Constable dispatch number: 281-463-6666.
  • Look for any vehicle that may be following you – make several turns if you are suspicious and do NOT go straight home.
  • If bumped, do NOT get out; go to the HPD substation on Beechnut or to a well-lit area with many people. Call Precinct 5 dispatch ASAP and describe the vehicle, its occupants and license plate number.

  • Don’t drive into your driveway if something in the surroundings looks unusual, such as the trash can out and moved, or a vehicle nearby with occupants and the motor running.

  • It's best to keep your cars in the garage, but if you must leave your car out, take all your valuable items inside. Do not leave purses, laptops, iPods, GPS devices or anything else of value in your car. If you leave a sweater or a blanket on the floor, a thief might think you are hiding something and break in to see what it is. Our area has seen a number of vehicle burglaries and your car/truck is vulnerable.

House security:

  • Have night lights on all sides – best with varying time settings. Exterior lighting around a house deters burglars. Motion-detector lights will scare away anyone skulking around your property. Make sure to trim shrubbery so lighting is not blocked. Leaving a light on inside your house also gives the impression someone is home and awake.
  • Park your cars in your garage, or as close to your garage as possible and lock them. Do NOT park them in the street!

  • Have double locks with long bolts on outside doors and USE them.

  • If you have an alarm system, be sure in writing to tell the alarm company to ALWAYS call Precinct 5 dispatch first, even before it calls you.

  • Program your house phone to speed-dial Precinct 5 Constable Dispatch at 281-463-6666.

  • Have a remote garage-door opener in your car. Open your garage door, drive in and close the door before unlocking your vehicle door.

  • If something looks strange, don’t enter your home. Call Precinct 5 and leave your property.

  • When you go out of town, stop delivery of daily newspapers. Get a neighbor to pick up the free newspapers and flyers from your yard and front door so your house doesn’t look unoccupied.

  • Keep a log of the serial numbers of your expensive electronics and document ALL other valuable items (including weapons). This assists in their possible return, as well as in the potential capture of the criminals should they attempt to sell to a pawn shop. Both HPD and the Sheriff's office have departments dedicated to this type of activity and Precinct 5 Constables work very closely with them to solve these crimes.

Walking at night:

  • Best not to walk after 9 p.m.

  • Never walk alone. Have a companion or large dog.

  • Keep your cell phone handy and Precinct 5 constable dispatch number programmed.

  • Run from strange vehicles or people approaching you. Use your cell phone ASAP to call the Constable at 281-463-6666.
